Pavement Designs, Design Reviews and Independent Verification
Our designs don't cost the earth. We pride ourselves in providing value for money and engineered outcomes. CI’s staff have proven experience in completing pavement designs, design reviews and independent verification in accordance with various Local, State, National and International Standards and Guidelines. Because of this experience, we can also bring different approaches and learnings from various road agencies |
Rehabilitation, Resurfacing and Flood Damage Designs
Pavement Rehabilitation is an area of engineering expertise in its own field which draws on a combination of different engineering skill sets and experiences. It is not a skill gained by sitting in a design office or referring to text books and design guides. Good designs consider practical requirements required to undertake the work. Next time when you ask for a pavement rehabilitation design, ask the designer what their real life construction and pavement performance experiences are outside the design office. Experience should be gained from real world practical experience, a thorough understanding of the basis behind various design philosophy’s, working knowledge of testing procedures, a working understanding of various material characteristics, working in road construction and maintenance operational areas and years of practice. CI brings this rare combination of knowledge and experience with the work that we do. We specialise in delivering practical pavement resurfacing and rehabilitation design packages as well as flood damage designs using value engineering principles and/or client specific requirements at cost effective prices; and often under very short deadlines. |
Asset Inspections
We provide this service to a range of different asset owners and includes culvert/bridges and general civil infrastructure assets. We use a range of different innovative techniques including thermal imaging and drones to access difficult to get to places. The drones that we use are equipped with a 20mp camera, avoidance sensors and are less than 2 kg in weight. We have found the thermal imaging to be useful in finding hot-spots such as those commonly found in switchboards. We have relationships with electrical contractors and work with them on a number of different projects. And can coordinate cross disciplinary asset inspections such as those commonly required for light poles and associated electrical infrastructure. Our remote drone aircraft's are precision controlled and have a lightweight construction which allows us to operate up close to subjects to gain a better view without compromising the asset or your safety. Our ability to conduct such highly detailed asset inspections from the air is unique and provides our customers with a safer, more cost effective and timely result. |
Value Engineering
When your advisors are guided by processes and/or have little or no understanding of pavement engineering principles and/or no practical construction and maintenance experience, value engineering is often overlooked and opportunities for cost saving or better long term performance are often lost. The cost of a cheap design often costs much more in total completed project costs than a well-considered design based on value engineering principles. We often redesign solutions for our clients which have been designed by others. Our staff have proven experience in bringing project benefits that far outweighing the cost of our service. CI excels in this area and are so confident in our ability, we are happy to offer services for long term customers based on a percentage of savings made. Obviously, if you are wanting to follow more traditional commercial terms, we are only happy to help out. |
Geotechnical and Asphalt Pavement Investigation
Have you ever picked up a pavement investigation report and seen asphalt referred to as spray seal or vice versa and / or seen road base referred to as fill? – Strangely enough, in our experiences it happens more often than not. Similarly, you may have come across a range of laboratory test results completed with little or no benefit or consideration of pavement engineering requirements or had critical testing requirements missed altogether? Or perhaps you have even seen design produced with little or no consideration to the actual properties of the asphalt? CI’s provides pavement sampling and investigation services by staff experienced in pavement works for the pavement engineering profession. Critical observations are recorded, asphalt cores can be taken, and the need for laboratory testing may be based on visual assessment of material with an understanding of what the critical properties are required in design - saving our clients the cost of unnecessary testing. CI uses GPR as a planning tool before undertaking destructive testing. This is a value added service to our Geotechnical and Asphalt Pavement Investigation Customers and in our experience provides a greater degree of confidence in optimising the number of test locations required. |
Thermal Imaging Service
CI own and operate their own FLIR E85 Thermal Imaging Camera. This camera adds key details from the visible light camera to the entire infrared image that is in real time so you can capture both visible and thermal imaging which helps identify the heat pattern, something particularly important when supervising asphalt laying and bitumen spraying works as well as for undertaking a range of different asset management inspections.
We also offer the camera for dry hire, contact us now for further details.

Pavement Investigation Coordination Services to Asset Owners and Major Consulting Houses
As part of our range of specialist services for major state government roadwork projects, we also offer the project management service of planning, coordinating and overseeing (if required) pavement investigations on the client’s behalf. This unique service ensures that all investigations are co-ordinated with other specialist service providers such as traffic controllers, service location companies and other skilled specialist providers. These works are overseen by RPEQ Pavement Engineers (not geotechnical engineers or technicians) who know what key pavement investigation requirements are, the processes and steps required to complete them along with what productivity targets to reasonably expect for specialist works. The end result is investigation efficiencies, sharing of project knowledge with short term sub-contractors, improved investigation outcomes, reduced inconvenience and risk to asset owners and road users. Call us today to discuss your major project investigation needs. |
Ground Penetrating Radar Survey for Non-Destructive Pavement Layer Determination
In addition to using GPR as a planning tool before undertaking destructive testing for our Geotechnical and Asphalt Pavement Investigation Customers, we also offer high speed GRP data collection at highway speeds. We have found that this service is suitable for measuring pavement layer thickness, detection of voids, bridge deck inspections, detection of wet areas and utility detection. We do also recommend that all data collected using GPR be calibrated using information collected from our Geotechnical and Asphalt Pavement Investigation. |
Thermography
CI offers the use of thermography to view the environment with and without visible illumination. The amount of radiation emitted by objects increase with temperature and this technology provides the ability to see variations in temperature. We have found this very useful when working with bituminous products whose properties are temperature dependent. This may be used to check for temperature variations at the back of an asphalt paver when asphalt is being laid. It could also be used for asset managers to monitor pavement temperatures and the influence of environmental changes as well as assist in selecting the right binder specification for spray seal applications so as to manage the risk of binder softening as a result of low bitumen softening points. |
How to Procure Our Services
We are registered on Vendor Panel, TMR’s Specialist Services Panel and have our standard Terms and Conditions, for which we work under.
If you need to work under existing procurement constraints, let us know as we also have working arrangements with other Engineering and Technical Services providers – we may be able to arrange something.
If you would like us to register on your Panel of Providers also contact us.
Our fee arrangements have sufficient flexibility to accommodate the needs of any particular assignment.
Depending upon the specific needs of a particular client or assignment, we are able to arrange time charges, lump sum charges, percentage fees or a combination of these. We can also arrange retainer agreements for the provision of regular contracts services, which give clients with security of a specialist overview, advice and risk management on a continuing basis.
